چکیده

We report on single-dish monitoring as well as extremely high angular resolution observations of the flaring H2O maser in the Seyfert 2 galaxy Mrk 348. The H2O line is redshifted by ∼130 km s −1 with respect to the systemic velocity, is very broad, with a FWHM of 130 km s, and has no detectable high velocity components within 1500 km s on either side of the strong line. Monitoring observations made with the Effelsberg 100m telescope show that the maser varies significantly on timescales as short as one day. VLBA observations indicate that the maser emission arises entirely from a region less than 0.25 pc in extent, located toward a continuum component thought to be associated with the receding jet.

**title** Asp Conference Series, Vol. **volume**, **publication Year** **editors** a Flaring Megamaser in Mrk 348

We report new observations of the H 2 O megamaser in the Seyfert 2 galaxy Mrk 348. Following our initial detection in 2000 March using the Effelsberg 100 m telescope, re-analysis of previous data on this source indicates that the maser was present but only marginally detectable in late 1997. Monitoring through late 2000 shows that the maser has again decreased to its original level. The H 2 O l...

Discovery of a very luminous megamaser during a radio flare in the Seyfert 2 galaxy Mrk 348

We report the detection of a new H2O megamaser in the Seyfert 2 galaxy Mrk 348 with the MPIfR 100 m telescope in Effelsberg. With an apparent isotropic luminosity of LH2O ' 420L the maser is the third most luminous maser discovered so far. The detected line is unusually broad (∆v ' 130 km s−1), is redshifted by ∼ 130 km s−1 from the systemic velocity, and is asymmetric with a pronounced blue wi...

The structure of the accretion disk in NGC 4258 derived from observations of its water vapor masers

A wealth of new information about the structure of the maser disk in NGC 4258 has been obtained from a series of 18 VLBA observations spanning three years, as well as from 32 additional epochs of spectral monitoring data from 1994 to the present, acquired with the VLA, Effelsberg, and GBT. The warp of the disk has been defined precisely. The thickness of the maser disk has been measured to be 1...

MERLIN imaging of the maser flare in Markarian 348

MERLIN images of Mrk 348 at 22 GHz show H 2 O maser emission at 0.02 – 0.11 Jy, within ∼ 0.8 pc of the nucleus. This is the first direct confirmation that molecular material exists close to the Seyfert 2 nucleus. Mrk 348 was observed in 2000 May one month after Falcke et al. (2000) first identified the maser in single-dish spectra. The peak maser flux density has increased about threefold. The ...
